Hope & Health the Message behind Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Quarterly
Record-breaking athlete and motivating personality in the world of fitness Lance Armstrong puts his popular “Livestrong” name on a new publication this month, which promises to further his dedication to the world of health and wellness. Livestrong Quarterly, part of the suite of offerings from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, debuts in December and will focus on health, healing, and advocacy for cancer survivors and their families.
Armstong has long been known as an unrivaled competitor in the world of cycling, with seven consecutive wins in the demanding 2,200 mile Tour de France. He also won a higher-stakes battle by overcoming a devastating 1996 cancer diagnosis. LSQ keeps the pace of his subsequent widespread dedication to advocacy by showcasing “health, wellness and body advocacy storytelling” through compelling editorial with a hopeful and helpful message. The magazine was created to appeal to Armstrong’s large activist community and others interested in aspects of wellness and survival. The magazine will feature segments devoted to food and nutrition, including information about cancer-fighting nutrients, antioxidants, metabolism and healing; support and community, including Q&As and e-therapy; and profiles of athletes and other famous achievers.
Armstrong is the founder and chairman of The Lance Armstrong Foundation, an organization established to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. The Foundation's mission is to unite people to fight cancer and pursue prevention, improve access to screening and care, improve the quality of life for survivors, and invest in research. Upcoming events include the Livestrong Challenge, a 2010 walk, run and ride event held in cities throughout the country, and the Livestrong Global Cancer Summit, scheduled to take place in October 2010. This past November, Armstrong was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Medal of Honor for Cancer Control at the organization’s annual conference in Los Angeles, California. Armstrong is among four Americans who are receiving the Society’s highest honor.
The Foundation is also the force behind Livestrong.com, a health and wellness goal-setting website which provides social networking, calorie tracking and diet tools, nutritional videos, news, and other health-related information. The site has heralded the benefits of blueberries as part of providing information on nutrition: blueberries have been praised for their antioxidant power and cancer-fighting properties on the site, and touted as one of the healthiest foods to buy.
